AASL to sponsor two Pre-Midwinter Institutes in San Diego
The American Association of School Librarians (AASL) will sponsor two pre-American Library Association Midwinter meeting institutes January 8 - 9, 2004, in San Diego, Calif.
Programs are as follows:
"Leading Through Collaboration,"
January 8, 2004, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
"Leading Through Collaboration" is first in a series of leadership institutes by AASL, available for nationwide use throughout the profession. Participants will learn how to identify personal leadership skills and set professional priorities with the assistance of the institute, "Leading Through Collaboration." The workshop ties into the basic concepts - collaboration, leadership, and technology - that underlie the vision of Information Power: Building Partnerships for Learning.Betty Bankhead, consultant, speaker and president of the Library Partnership, will facilitate "Leading Through Collaboration". Bankhead is a graduate of Louisiana State University with a B.S. in Education and a Masters degree in Library Science. She is a long-time advocate of "teaching libraries" and information literacy with over 30 years of experience as a teacher and a library media specialist. She is also an active member of the American Association of School Librarians, serving for five years on a task force for writing and implementing Information Literacy Standards for Student Learning and Information Power: Building Partnerships for Learning
"School Libraries and Evidence-Based Practice: Difference, Intervention and Transformation"
(Part I)
January 9, 2004, 1:00 - 5:00 p.m.
A two part institute titled "School Libraries and Evidence-Based Practice: Difference, Intervention and Transformation," and "How to Write a Successful Grant Proposal" will be presented. Part one will focus on evidence-based practice, a concept that is central to the effective work of school librarians and to the future of the profession."How to Write a Successful Grant Proposal"
(Part II)
Part two of the institute will show participants how to write successful grant proposals, incorporating information from Evidence-Based Practice learned in part one as well as information on seeking sources for funding. The institute will be presented by Dr. Ross J. Todd, Associate Professor of the School of Communication, Information & Library Studies, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey; and Heidi Hoerman, an instructor at the School of Library and Information Science, University of South Carolina, Columbia.
