Baker & Taylor Scholarship Grants announced
The Division and Membership Promotion Committee of the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), is proud to announce that Laurie A. Rose and Gregory D. Lum have won the Baker & Taylor Scholarship Grants for 2003. Each will receive a $1,000 grant to attend the ALA Annual Conference in Toronto.
The Baker & Taylor Scholarship is awarded for first time attendance at an Annual Conference. The recipients must be members of YALSA and must have between one and 10 years experience working with teenagers. Applications are available through the YALSA Web site (
www.ala.org/YALSA) and are due December 1, 2003, for the following year's Annual Conference.
Rose is a youth services librarian at the Orono (Maine) Public Library. The library shares space with the high school library and offers convenient access to approximately 400 high school students and 200 middle school students. Laurie plans many varied teen programs such as an end of summer pool party. Laurie stated in her application, "Teens have been one of the most rewarding groups of individuals that I have worked with."
Lum is a library media specialist at Astoria (Ore.) High School. Gregory has 775 high school students using the library on a daily basis and has provided innovative programs including a green eggs and ham breakfast. Larry Lockett, Astoria High School principal, said, "Gregory cares about every student in the school and spends time connecting with all of them. He is extremely eager to gather information at the national level and network with young adult librarians across the country."
