Three awarded 3M/NMRT Professional Development Grant

Mary Mannix, Jenna Freedman, and Tanzi Merritt have been named recipients of the 2002 3M/NMRT (New Members Round Table) Professional Development Grants. The monetary award, sponsored by 3M Company since 1975, covers the costs of attending the American Library Association's (ALA) Annual Conference, including conference registration, airfare, hotel and incidental expenses. The winners were chosen from more than 75 applicants, and will use the grant to attend the ALA conference in Atlanta, June 14-20.

"The committee was impressed by the high level of professional activity of the applicants, all of whom are to be commended for their service contributions to the profession," said Committee Member Michael Bolam. Award criteria included: potential to be an active and effective ALA member, as evidenced by past activity in professional associations at the local, regional or national level; a general sense of drive and initiative; and the ability to apply what was learned at the conference to better local institutions and the library field as a whole.

Mary Mannix is Maryland Room Manager at the C. Burr Artz Central Library, one of the Fredrick County (Md.) Public Libraries. As an archivist in a public library, Mannix feels it is important to attend national conferences to meet with her colleagues and remain active in the organization.

Jenna Freedman is Electronic Services Librarian at Iona College, New Rochelle, N.Y., and Contributing Editor for The U*N*A*B*A*S*H*E*D Librarian. Freedman will use her trip to Atlanta to continue her work with the Better Salaries and Pay Equity Committee and the Social Responsibilities Round Table.

Tanzi Merritt is Reference Librarian at the Kentucky Virtual Library in Frankfort. Atlanta will be Merritt's first national conference. She hopes to network with her colleagues, attend meetings of interest and join a committee.

The award committee would like to congratulate all the winners and thank all who applied.
