OLOS announces Medical Information Resources preconference

The American Library Association (ALA) Office for Literacy and Outreach Services (OLOS), announces the "Medical Resources for Diverse Communities: @ your library™" preconference Friday, June 14, 8:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m., at the Marriott Marquis Hotel, Atlanta.

"Medical Resources for Diverse Communities: @ your library" highlights the use of resources available through the National Library of Medicine so that participants can:

  • Enhance your community's resources through increased awareness of the National Library of Medicine's (NLM) databases and services;
  • Learn to effectively access guidelines on the dissemination of pertinent health information through local libraries, and to share what you've learned with your library users;
  • Increase awareness of NLM's programs and other resources for special populations; and
  • Receive "train-the-trainer" experience and a certificate of completion at the end of the preconference.

The preconference speaker, Nathan Stinson, is the deputy assistant secretary for Minority Health and the director of the Office of Minority Health, Department of Health and Human Services. The mission of the Office of Minority Health is to improve the health of racial and ethnic populations through the development of effective health policies and programs that help to eliminate health disparities and gaps. Stinson has served in a variety of positions with the Department of Health and Human Services, and served as a primary care physician on the Navajo Reservations at Chinle and Kayonta in Arizona.

Scholarship support of $200 will be provided to selected librarians, library staff and library school students who work or will work in environments that primarily serve special ethnic populations. For additional information go to the
OLOS Web site or contact Lucie Chen at

This preconference is jointly sponsored by the American Indian Library Association; the Asian Pacific American Librarians Association; the Black Caucus of the American Library Association; the Chinese American Librarians Association; REFORMA: National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish-Speaking; and NLM.
