Nominations sought for ALA Recognition awards and grants
Nominations are being sought for the 2003 American Library Association (ALA) Recognition Awards and Grants presented annually by the ALA.
Unless otherwise noted, the deadline for awards is December 1, 2002. For applications visit the

ALA Information Today Library of the Future Award honors a library, library consortium, group of librarians or support organization for their innovative planning for, applications of, or development of patron training programs about information technology in a library setting. The award includes $1,500 and a 24k gold-framed citation, donated by Information Today, Inc.
Beta Phi Mu is presented to a faculty member of a library school or an individual for distinguished service to education in librarianship. The award includes $500 and a 24k gold-framed citation donated by Beta Phi Mu International Library Science Honorary Society.
William Young Boyd Literary Novel Award is given to an author of a military novel that honors the service of American veterans during a time of war: 1861-1865, 1914-1918 or 1939-1945. The award includes $5,000 and a 24k gold-framed citation, donated by William Young Boyd.
Marshall Cavendish Excellence in Library Programming Award is given to a school or public library that demonstrates excellence in library programming by providing programs that have community impact and respond to community needs. Advocacy, partnerships and creative of use of resources, regardless of the size of the library, will be taken into consideration. The award includes $5,000 and a 24k gold-framed citation, donated by the Marshall Cavendish Corporation.
Melvil Dewey Medal honors an individual or group for a recent creative professional achievement in library management, training, cataloging and classification and the tools and techniques of librarianship. The award includes a Dewey Medal and a 24k gold-framed citation, donated OCLC/Forest Press, Inc.
EBSCO ALA Conference Sponsorship provides 10 $1,000 awards to help librarians attend ALA's Annual Conference. To apply for this award applicants must submit an essay of no more than 250 words addressing, "How will attending this ALA Conference contribute to your professional development?" The award is donated by EBSCO Subscription Services.
Equality Award honors an individual or group for an outstanding contribution that promotes equality in the library profession. The award includes $500 and a 24k gold-framed citation donated by Scarecrow Press, Inc.
Elizabeth Futas Catalyst for Change Award recognizes and honors a librarian whom invests time and talent to make a positive change in the profession of librarianship. The award includes $1,000 and a 24k gold-framed citation, donated by the Elizabeth Futas Memorial Fund.
Gale Group Financial Development Award is given to a library organization that exhibited meritorious achievement in carrying out a library financial development project to secure new funding resources for a public or academic library. The award includes $2,500 and a 24k gold-framed citation, donated by Gale Research Co.
Grolier Foundation Award honors a librarian whose "unusual contribution" to the stimulation and guidance of children and young adult reading exemplifies outstanding achievement in the profession. The award includes $1,000 and a 24k gold-framed citation, donated by the Grolier Educational Corporation.
Highsmith Library Literature Awardhonors an outstanding contribution to library literature issued during the three years preceding presentation. The book might emphasize management principles and practices; understanding and applications of new technologies; or education for librarians or other information specialists. The award includes $500 and a 24k gold-framed citation, donated by Highsmith, Inc.
Paul Howard Award for Courage honors a librarian, library board, library group or an individual who has exhibited unusual courage for the benefit of library programs or services. The award, given every two years, includes $1,000 and a 24k gold-framed citation, donated by Paul Howard.
Joseph W. Lippincott Award is given to a librarian for distinguished service to the profession. To qualify, the librarian must display outstanding participation in professional library activities, notable published professional writing or other significant activities on behalf of the profession. The award includes $1,000 and a 24k gold-framed citation, donated by Joseph W. Lippincott, Jr.
Carroll Preston Baber Research Grant is given for innovative research that could lead to an improvement in library services for any specified group(s) of people. Recipients receive up to $7,500, donated by Eric R. Baber.

Loleta D. Fyan Public Library Research Grant ,awards one or more grants of up to $10,000 to a library, library school, association, unit or chapter of ALA or an individual for the development and improvement of public libraries and the services they provide. The grant is donated by the Fyan Estate. The application deadline is December 13. SIRSI's Leader in Library Technology Grant is awarded to a library organization to encourage and enable continued advancements in quality services for a project that makes creative or groundbreaking use of technology to deliver exceptional services to its community. The grant includes $10,000 and a 24k gold-framed citation, donated by SIRSI Corporation. The H.W. Wilson Library Staff Development Grant is awarded to a library organization for a program to further its staff development goals and objectives. The award includes $3,500 and a 24k gold-framed citation, donated by the H.W. Wilson Company. World Book-ALA Goal Grant is awarded to ALA units for the advancement of public, academic or school library service and librarianship through support of programs that implement the goals and priorities of ALA. Recipients receive $10,000 donated by World Book, Inc.
