Librarians receive scholarships to attend OLOS preconference

Six librarians in outreach services were selected to receive scholarships to attend "Different Voices, Common Quest: Adult Literacy & Outreach in Libraries," a preconference to the American Library Association's (ALA) Annual Conference in Atlanta. Sponsored by the ALA Office for Literacy and Outreach Services (OLOS), the preconference will be held June 13 and 14, and is intended to help participants develop effective strategies for building on community assets to enhance and expand outreach services in libraries. Eleven service delivery areas will be highlighted.

Scholarship recipients include:

  • Steve Cooper, Anderson (Ind.) Public Library;
  • Susan Head, Virginia Beach (Va.) Public Library;
  • Linda Kragh, Miami-Dade Public Library System, Miami, Fla.;
  • Tomeka Oubichon, Tulane University Medical Center Reference Library, New Orleans;
  • Helen Poyer, Fountaindale Public Library District, Bolingbrook, Ill.; and
  • Margaret Wagoner, Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library, Plainfield, Ind.

Winners were chosen on the basis of need and personal commitment to providing excellent outreach services to the communities in which they work. Each winner will receive $500 to cover registration and other expenses associated with attending the preconference.

The scholarships are provided by donations from Matthews, Farber, and OBS, Inc.
