John M. Budd wins Highsmith Library Literature Award

John M. Budd, an associate professor in the School of Information Science and Learning Technologies at the University of Missouri-Columbia is the winner of the 2002 Highsmith Library Literature award (formerly the G.K. Hall Award for Library Literature). Scarecrow Press published his winning book "Knowledge and Knowing in Library and Information Science" in 2001. The award, a citation and $500 donated by Highsmith Press, recognizes an author(s) who makes an outstanding contribution to library literature.

"The committee was highly impressed with the depth and breadth of Budd's work and found it to be thought-provoking and enlightening," said Chair Dora Ho.

"Knowledge and Knowing in Library and Information Science" has been described as "an effort at judging philosophical discourse both by way of description and by way of suggesting a strategy for the evaluation of past and present thought and practice and a direction for the future." Budd has authored numerous publications and articles in professional and scholarly journals and has given several presentations at national and state conferences.

Budd is an active member in several ALA divisions - Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL), Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS) and Reference and User Services Association (RUSA) - and is active in his state library association. He has won numerous awards, including Graduate Teacher of the Year (1998-99), University of Missouri-Columbia, College of Education.

He holds a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, an M.L.S from Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, and an M.A. from the University of Texas, Austin.

The Highsmith Library Literature Award will be presented Tuesday, June 18, at the ALA Annual Conference in Atlanta.
