ASCLA publishes two new books
The Association of Specialized and Cooperative Library Agencies (ASCLA) Changing Horizons Series has added two titles: "Library Services to the Sandwich Generation and Serial Caregivers" by Linda Lucas Walling and "Planning for Library Services to People with Disabilities" by Rhea Joyce Rubin.
"Library Services to the Sandwich Generation and Serial Caregivers" was written to provide librarians with tools to assist multigenerational caregivers who are ready to retire and be released from family responsibilities, but find themselves caring for their elderly, impaired parents at the same time their adult children are returning home for economic or other reasons, often bringing the grandchildren along.
The guide includes suggestions on library activities and projects that can be provided to older adults; graphs and tables that profile demographics, specifically race; age and geography; and a list of professional organizations, Web sites and other materials.
The ISBN for the guide is 8389-8139-9. The book costs $20 for non-ASCLA members and $18 for ASCLA members.
"Planning for Library Services to People with Disabilities" was written in response to two of the 1990 American Disabilities Act's (ADA) mandates: any public library must provide equal services to any person requesting them, regardless of disability and no qualified individual with a disability shall be excluded from participation or be denied services or be subjected to discrimination. In the book, Rubin has created a planning process to ensure that libraries consider all of the issues necessary to comply with the mandates.
The planning process includes: gathering information; convening an advisory committee; identifying issues; analyzing the library's current plan; drafting goals and objectives; determining available resources; finalizing goals and objectives; drafting the plan; finalizing the plan; and evaluating the plan.
The book's ISBN is 8389-8168-2 and costs $30 for non-ASCLA and $27 for ASCLA members. To order copies of these publications contact: PBD at 1-800-545-2433, press 7 or see
