2003 Arbuthnot Lecture date and time announced

The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) is pleased to announce that the date and time for the 2003 May Hill Arbuthnot Honor Lecture have been confirmed.

Maurice Sendak, acclaimed children's book illustrator and author, will deliver the lecture Saturday, April 5 at 1:30 p.m. at the Kresge Auditorium on the campus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Mass. A reception will be held immediately following the lecture at the Lobdell Dining Hall at the Stratton Student Center.

"We are excited to be co-hosting the Arbuthnot Lecture in Cambridge," said Daryl Mark, coordinator of Children's Services at Cambridge Public Library. "As Gregory Maguire, codirector of Children's Literature New England states, 'In works of unparelleled complexity, moral beauty, and respect for the young reader Maurice Sendak has enriched the literature of childhood.'"

Named in honor of May Hill Arbuthnot (1884-1969), the author of Children and Books (1947) and co-creator of the
Dick and Jane series, the Arbuthnot Lectures are delivered annually by well-known figures in the world of children's literature. Past Arbuthnot Lecturers include Lillian Gerhardt (1999), Katherine Paterson (1997), Susan Cooper (2001), and Philip Pullman (2002).

ALSC is a division of the American Library Association.
