Westlake Porter Public Library Wins 2001 Grolier National Library Week Grant

Westlake Porter Public Library, Westlake, Ohio, is the winner of the 2001 Grolier National Library Week Grant awarded by the American Library Association (ALA).

The $4,000 grant, sponsored by the Grolier Publishing Company, is awarded to a library or library association for the best proposal for a local or statewide public awareness campaign that supports the theme and goals of National Library Week, which is April 1-7. This year’s theme is “@ your library™,” which is also the brand for The Campaign for America's Libraries, the ALA’s new five-year public education campaign to promote the value of libraries and librarians nationwide. Forty-three proposals were submitted this year, the highest number of applications ever submitted for this grant.

The Westlake Porter Public Library will partner with the Westlake city schools, the WestShore Chamber of Commerce, and Friends of Westlake Porter Public Library to sponsor a full week of public programming to highlight the library’s special services. Under the week’s umbrella theme of “A World of Possibilities…@ your library,” programming each day will run under different sub-themes, such as “Honoring those who make a difference…@ your library,” “You never know who you'll run into… @ your library,” and "Making connections… @ your library." Programming will be accompanied by special promotions, such as a television spot on a news channel, the unveiling of a new Web site, and a radio broadcast from the library.

Originally unveiled to the ALA membership at the ALA Annual Conference last July, The Campaign for America's Libraries will launch to the public during National Library Week. To learn more about the campaign and how to launch it locally during that week, please visit www.ala.org/@yourlibrary.
