Newbery and Caldecott Mock Elections published
"Newbery and Caldecott Mock Elections," a revised edition of "The Newbery & Caldecott Mock Election Kit: Choosing Champions in Children's Books" (ALA Editions, 1994), was released by the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association (ALA).
Written by Kathleen Simonetta, Nancy Hackett and Linda Ward Callaghan, this practical manual provides all the information needed to successfully plan and execute a mock election, including:
- Clearly written procedures and helpful checklists and evaluation forms for planning, implementing and evaluating an election;
- Tips for successful book discussions;
- Guidelines on how to look at and evaluate picture books;
- A bibliography of print and electronic resources that provide information about the history of the awards; the award books; evaluation criteria and review media; and the award-winning authors; and
- Camera-ready certificates and a vote tally sheet that can be reproduced and used election after election.
Newbery and Caldecott mock elections provide a fun and engaging way for participants to raise their awareness of outstanding children's literature; improve listening, discussion and communication skills; and sharpen analytical skills. They can be designed for many audiences from librarians and educators to children, and from parents and caregivers to community youth leaders. The guide can be used by librarians and educators serving young readers, their families and caregivers.
The price is $18 for non-ALA members and $16.20 for ALA members. The ISBN is 0-8389-8161-5. For order information, contact Laura Schulte-Cooper at 1-800-545-2433, ext. 2165 or
