ALCTS announces Esther J. Piercy Award recipient

Oya Yildrim Rieger, coordinator, Office of Distributed Learning at Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y., is the recipient of the Esther J. Piercy Award presented by the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS), a division of the American Library Association (ALA).

The award, $1,500 and a citation donated by Yankee Book Peddler, Inc., is given to a librarian with less than 10 years experience, for their contributions and leadership in the field of library collections and technical services.

"The jury was impressed not only with Oya's accomplishments in developing library access via the Web, digital imaging, metadata and digital preservation projects at Cornell's Mann Library, but with her successful efforts to share this knowledge with the library community through the monograph she co-authored, workshops, conference presentations and a co-developed Web tutorial," Esther J. Piercy Award Chair October Ivins said.

"Her expertise has been recognized with appointment to metadata standards committees within American National Standards Institute (ANSI)/National Information Standards Organization (NISO), Online Computer Library Center (OCLC)/Research Libraries Group (RLG) and the MetaEProject, sponsored by the European Commission," Ivins continued. "Oya shows great promise for ongoing achievements in research and practice in digital preservation, encompassing technical, administrative and policy aspects."

She holds a master's in library science from Columbia University, a master's in public administration from the University of Oklahoma and a bachelor's in economy and administrative services from Middle East Technical University. She is a member of ALA and the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL), a division of the ALA.

The award will be presented June 18, at 9:30 a.m., during the ALA Annual Conference, in San Francisco.
