Create an Oral History Project with this December Core Classroom Session

The former ALCTS Preservation and Reformatting Section (PARS) for several years have created oral histories of commercial binders and preservation librarians which are available on the American Library Association Institutional Repository (ALAIR). The presenters will demonstrate how to create and process oral histories, and how to upload them to ALAIR. Be a part of this or other history recordings to document the changes in the profession over the past 50 years. This class will also teach you how to lead an independent oral history project.

Core: Leadership, Infrastructure, and Futures, will present the Core Classroom “Hearing the Story: Creating an Oral History Project,” from Monday, December 14, 2020 through Monday, January 4, 2021.

Core Classroom Format:
Students receive login instructions one week prior to the classroom start date.  Students have 24/7 access to the class site for the duration of the class, and aside from assignment deadlines, the work can be completed at their own pace.  Presenters will have office hours to provide guidance and feedback as students work their way through the material.  The following list of live virtual discussion sessions, moderated by the presenters are the only live class events that students are asked to attend:

  • Monday, December 14, 2020, 1:00pm – 2:00pm Central Time
  • Friday, December 18, 2020, 1:00pm – 2:00pm Central Time
  • Monday, December 28, 2020, 1:00pm – 2:00pm Central Time
  • Monday, January 4, 2021, 1:00pm – 2:00pm Central Time
     

Upon completion of this class attendees will be able to:

  • Formulate a cogent oral history interview process, determine forms needed, and develop questions to ask interviewees regarding a particular project.
     
  • Successfully process the recordings, audio and video, and create indexing and brief descriptions for easy search and retrieval.
     
  • Understand what is required for uploading and making public the interviews for the ALA community, interested researchers, and the public.
     
  • Create their own independent oral history project.

 

Who should attend:
Anyone with an interest in oral histories and their creation is welcome to participate.

Presenters:
Jeanne Drewes has been active in ALA for over forty years and has conducted over forty interviews which are available on the ALAIR for both binders and preservation librarians. She has received numerous ALA awards including the Ken Haycock Award and most recently the ALCTS Ross Atkinson lifetime achievement award.

Liza Hazelwood is a film major at VCU and worked with Jeanne last summer on the processing and uploading of the files. She is a documentary filmmaker currently making work on mending. She also does book repair.

Requirements:  A computer with Internet access is required. A high-speed connection and headphones are recommended. No experience is necessary; beginners from any background are welcome.  Participants should create a Google Drive account and Moodle account prior to the session. Account setup instructions will be sent 1 week in advance of the start date.
