University of North Carolina at Greensboro Selected as 2018 Student Chapter of the Year Award Winner

The New Members Round Table (NRMT) of the American Library Association Student Chapter of the Year Award Committee (SCOTYA) congratulates the University of North Carolina at Greensboro’s Library and Information Studies Student Association as the winner of the 2018 ALA Student Chapter of the Year Award.

The SCOTYA Committee was impressed by University of North Carolina (UNCG) at Greensboro’s Library and Information Studies Student Association’s outreach to distance education students. The association hosted meetups in several locations for distance students and utilized a variety of tools to communicate with members. Association members were active in their local communities as part of a community service program celebrating the 125^th anniversary of UNCG. Their initial goal was to give back to their communities by completing 125 hours of community service initiatives. The program was so successful that they increased the number of hours to 300! Additionally, the Library and Information Studies program at UNCG was undergoing reaccreditation. The association held town hall meetings and visited classes to provide information about the reaccreditation process and to answer student questions.  

This is the first time University of North Carolina at Greensboro’s Library and Information Studies Student Association has received the award.

The runner-up this year is Emporia State University. The committee noted the chapter’s outreach to undergraduate students and alumni, the reformation of the campus SAA chapter, and the diversity of programming and events offered.

The ALA Office for Human Resource Development and Recruitment (HRDR) serves as the liaison for the New Members Round Table.
