CHICAGO—The Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS) announces that Bruce Johnson is the recipient of the 2018 Margaret Mann Citation presented by its Cataloging and Metadata Management Section (CaMMS). The Mann Citation will be presented on June 23 at the ALCTS Awards Ceremony at the 2018 American Library Association (ALA) Annual Conference and Exhibition in New Orleans, La.

The Mann Citation, recognizing outstanding professional achievement in cataloging or classification, includes a $2,000 scholarship donated in the recipient’s honor by OCLC, Inc. to the library school of the winner’s choice. Johnson has chosen the University of Maryland’s College of Information Studies (iSchool) as the recipient of this year’s scholarship award.

Johnson’s outstanding professional achievements in cataloging have had a lasting and positive impact on our national and international professional community. His most notable and well-known achievement: leading the creation, development and implementation of Cataloger’s Desktop cannot be understated. His work on Cataloger’s Desktop began in 1989, but he has continued his active support and development of this resource through recent years as well. Cataloger’s Desktop has been an invaluable contribution to standardizing practice in individual libraries, by aggregating and integrating the policies, guidelines, and rules of our profession.

Beyond this signal achievement, Johnson has displayed his outstanding leadership in coordinating the development of 33 new and revised ALA-LC Romanization tables. His collaboration with members of the ALCTS Committee on Cataloging: Asian and African Materials (CC:AAM) and language specialists around the world to refine Romanization tables has made non-Roman resources more visible within our bibliographic sphere. Johnson also serves as a liaison to the U.S. Board on Geographic Names (BGN) and in 2016 served as the vice chair of the Foreign Names Committee. Through these achievements, he continues his broad efforts to standardize policies and guide cataloging practice.

Johnson has made deep and sustained contributions to professional cataloging associations throughout his career. He has been a leader in ALCTS and ALA, and made outstanding contributions to a variety of cataloging committees, including CC:DA, MARBI and ALCTS AV. When remarking on his committee work, nominators specifically mentioned his deft leadership, perseverance, personal integrity and generosity in mentoring fellow librarians and association members.

For his contributions to cataloging, including the conception, enhancement and maintenance of Cataloger’s Desktop, his achievements in the coordination and development of ALA-LC Romanization tables, and his leadership and dedication to our professional associations, ALCTS is proud to name Johnson as the recipient of the 2018 Margaret Mann Citation.
