Barnett, Johns seek 2007-2008 AASL presidency
CHICAGO – The American Association of School Librarians (AASL), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), is pleased to announce its presidential candidates for the 2007-2008 year. Cassandra G. Barnett, a school library media specialist at Fayetteville (Ark.) High School, and Sara Kelly Johns, a school library media specialist at Lake Placid (N.Y.) Middle/Senior High School, have announced their candidacy for the office of AASL president.
When elected, the candidate will assume the office of AASL President-Elect for the 2006-07 year and start their one-year term as AASL President in the summer of 2007.
Barnett currently serves as Member-at-Large on the AASL Board of Directors (2004-06), is a member of the 2006 National School Library Media Program of the Year Award Subcommittee, and serves on the AASL Annual Conference 2006 Committee. Barnett has over 27 years of experience in the school library media profession and has been an active member of AASL and state professional organizations for over 20 years.
Johns is currently Region II Director on the AASL Board, representing D.C., Del., Md., N.J., N.Y., Pa., and also serves on the 2006 National School Library Media Program of the Year Award Subcommittee, the AASL New Member Mentoring Special Committee, and the ALA Library Education Assembly. Johns has been an active member of national and state professional organizations for several years and has served on many AASL committees and the AASL Board in various positions.
Both presidential candidates will address members at the AASL Candidates' Forum at the 2006 ALA Midwinter Meeting in San Antonio. The Candidates' Forum will be held on Sunday, January 21, 12 to 1 p.m., immediately following the AASL Affiliate Assembly meeting in the Del Rey North meeting room at the Hilton Palacio del Rio Hotel. The Candidates' Forum provides an opportunity for all of the 2006 candidates for AASL offices to speak and meet with members.

www.ala.org/aasl/elections in February. All current ALA/AASL members are eligible to vote in the 2006 election. Polls will open on March 15, 2006 and close on April 24, 2006.
