American Libraries features Senator Obama remarks from ALA 2005 Annual Conference
( CHICAGO) U.S. Senator Barack Obama, whose pro-library June 25 keynote address at the American Library Association 2005 Annual Conference in Chicago brought a crowd of nearly 10,000 people to their feet, will be featured in the August issue of
American Libraries, the magazine of the ALA.
Obama is the author of a cover story, adapted from the speech, as well as the subject of an exclusive interview in which he shares his thoughts and memories about libraries and the important role they play in American life and in his own career. Obama credits libraries with helping him land his first job as a community organizer, which brought him to Chicago and led to his career in Illinois politics.
In the article, Obama observes that "libraries have a special role to play in our knowledge economy" and "should be a place where parents and children come to read together and learn together."
American Libraries is sent to roughly 66,000 individuals and organizations worldwide. ALA members receive
American Libraries as a perquisite of membership. The magazine also is available to libraries and other institutions by paid subscription, and single issues are available for $6. For more information about
