Understanding and supporting children and young people in care
CHICAGO — Exacerbated by the effects of austerity and cuts to public services, countries across the world are experiencing a crisis in the provision of care for children and young people. Wars, famine, and environmental disaster have led to an increase in young people arriving here from abroad, often as separated children. How can libraries and library workers respond? Published by Facet Publishing and available through the ALA Store, “Libraries and Care-experienced Children and Young People” draws on the experience of library staff and young people to offer an essential guide to how libraries can best understand and support these patrons. John Vincent explores practices that have proved beneficial and effective, and explains why. Chapters cover:
- the support libraries have provided in the past;
- how libraries are responding today; and
- case studies that draw on the experience of individuals abroad.
Vincent has worked in the public sector since the 1960s, primarily for Hertfordshire, Lambeth, and Enfield public library services in the UK. In 1997, he was invited to become part of the team that produced the UK's first review of public libraries and social exclusion (from which CILIP’s LGBTQ+ Network, which he now coordinates, originated). He runs courses and lectures, writes, produces regular newsletters and ebulletins, and lobbies for greater awareness of the role that libraries, archives, museums, and the cultural and heritage sector play in contributing to social justice. He is also the author of “Libraries and Sanctuary: Supporting Refugees and Other New Arrivals.”
