2026 Mary V. Gaver Scholarship Recipient - Lane F. DuBois

The American Library Association (ALA) is pleased to announce the selection of Lane Francis DuBois of Eugene, Oregon as the 2026 recipient of the Mary V. Gaver Scholarship.

The $3,000 scholarship was established to honor the memory of a past ALA president and Rutgers University professor, who made many contributions to library youth services. The scholarship is awarded to a person pursuing a master's degree in library and information studies, with a specialty in youth services.

DuBois’s passion for youth librarianship began as a summer camp counselor during the COVID-19 pandemic, where dramatic read-alouds of the Warriors series sparked enthusiasm for reading among campers ages 6–11. The experience highlighted the power of books to inspire connection, imagination, and joy.

After earning a bachelor’s degree in art & technology, DuBois joined the University of Oregon Libraries as a full-time support staff member. Library experience has strengthened career goals centered on youth services, research, visual arts, and creative programming.

DuBois has also demonstrated leadership in library accessibility, successfully advocating for multi-stall gender-inclusive restrooms at the University of Oregon library.

“I dream of becoming a youth librarian and helping to coordinate diverse collections and programs,” DuBois said.

DuBois plans to pursue an MLIS at San Jose State University, with a focus on censorship, diverse collections, and inclusive programming. The long-term goal is to create welcoming library spaces where young people can find representation, understanding, and belonging.

DuBois will attend San Jose State University (CA).
