AASL Commends Washington State Library and the Northwest Council for Computer Education
CHICAGO – Acting upon resolutions submitted by the Washington Library Association School Library Division (WLA-ScLD), the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) formally commends the Washington State Library for sustained support of school librarians through accessible professional development, leadership initiatives, and dedicated advocacy, and the Northwest Council for Computer Education Teacher-Librarian Summit and Teacher Librarian of the Year award for elevating the visibility and impact of school librarians through its innovative award program, highlighting school librarians' essential role among education decision-makers.
Washington State Library
The Washington State Library's support has made it an indispensable partner for school librarians throughout the state. By investing in professional learning, collaboration, and leadership, the Library has helped school librarians feel valued, connected, and equipped to meet the evolving needs of their school communities. AASL President April Dawkins said, "School librarians thrive when they have access to meaningful professional learning and a network of support. The Washington State Library has created both, ensuring that school librarians across the state have the resources, encouragement, and opportunities they need to lead with confidence."
WLA-ScLD’s Board of Directors, School Libraries Representative, Elizabeth Roberts shared, “Over the past several years, the Washington State Library has helped Teacher Librarians feel seen, supported, and empowered. Their dedication to professional learning and collaboration has had a profound impact on our profession, and we are grateful to recognize their outstanding contributions."
AASL Chapter Assembly Chair Steve Tetreault said, "The Washington State Library has demonstrated what true partnership looks like. By investing in the professional growth and success of school librarians, they have strengthened school libraries across Washington and created opportunities that benefit educators and learners alike. The AASL Chapter Assembly is honored to recognize their exceptional service and leadership."
Northwest Council for Computer Education
The Northwest Council for Computer Education (NCCE) serves a broad community of educators, technology leaders, and administrators. By elevating school librarians within this larger educational community, NCCE helps expand understanding of the profession and demonstrates how school librarians are integral leaders in educational technology, media literacy, and student-centered learning. AASL President April Dawkins said, “What makes NCCE's commitment especially meaningful is that it comes from an organization whose reach extends far beyond school libraries. By recognizing school librarians as educational technology leaders, NCCE has amplified the profession's impact and inspired broader support for equitable access to qualified school librarians."
WLA’s Board of Directors School Libraries Representative, Elizabeth Roberts, shared, “The Northwest Council for Computer Education has demonstrated that teacher librarians are indispensable leaders in today's schools. By creating meaningful opportunities to learn, collaborate, and be recognized alongside other education leaders, NCCE has elevated the profession and strengthened student learning throughout the region."
AASL Chapter Assembly Chair Steve Tetreault added, “The AASL Chapter Assembly is proud to recognize NCCE for creating a space where school librarians are celebrated as innovators, collaborators, and leaders. Their commitment to elevating the profession strengthens our regional networks and helps ensure that school library expertise remains an essential part of conversations about teaching, technology, and student success."
