Indiana University Bloomington Named 2026 NMRT Student Chapter of the Year
The New Members Round Table (NMRT) is proud to announce the Indiana University Bloomington Student Chapter as the recipient of the 2026 Student Chapter of the Year Award (SCOTYA), recognizing a remarkable transformation from inactivity to a thriving, inclusive, and highly engaged student community.
After a period of inactivity in Fall 2024, the chapter relaunched in 2025 with just two student leaders and two faculty advisors. Despite initial uncertainty about the organization’s future, these founding members reimagined the chapter as a space for accessible professional development, educational programming, and meaningful community building. Within one year, the chapter expanded to 25 active members who regularly participate in events, with a total of 45 students engaged across programs and initiatives.
The chapter’s growth is rooted in an innovative, flexible approach to membership. Recruitment efforts include outreach through academic orientations, foundational courses, social media campaigns, and strong word-of-mouth advocacy. Their member-driven leadership model empowers students to shape programming and engagement based on their interests and availability. By eliminating dues and rigid participation requirements, the chapter has created an inclusive environment that accommodates students balancing work, family, and academic commitments.
Programming is entirely student-led and reflects a dynamic blend of professional development, hands-on learning, and social connection. Monthly general body meetings feature guest speakers, interactive activities, and networking opportunities. Signature programs such as the “AmaZINE Extravaganza” and “Jokebook Workshop” highlight creative engagement with library collections, while collaborative initiatives like the Transcriptathon connect students to national service projects.
The chapter has also demonstrated exceptional commitment to professional engagement beyond campus. In 2025, 13 members attended the American Library Association National Conference in Philadelphia, with the chapter securing funding to cover travel and lodging. This initiative not only expanded professional networks but also strengthened connections with alumni and industry leaders.
Through intentional communication strategies—including active social media engagement, email updates, and collaborative digital platforms—the chapter has built a cohesive and participatory community. Advocacy campaigns promoting intellectual freedom and diverse reading have further amplified member voices and reinforced the organization’s values.
This award recognizes the Indiana University Bloomington Student Chapter’s outstanding achievement in rebuilding from the ground up, fostering inclusive participation, and creating impactful programming that supports both professional growth and community connection. Their success serves as a model for student chapters nationwide.
The runner-up this year is San Jose State University. The SCOTYA Committee noted the chapter’s awards and honors, growth in membership, and diversity of programs and activities.
