Padfield’s updated UK copyright manual for archivists and records managers

book cover for Padfield on Copyright for Archivists and Records Managers, Seventh Edition

CHICAGO — Published by Facet Publishing and available through the ALA Store, the new seventh edition of “Padfield on Copyright for Archivists and Records Managers” uniquely outlines copyright law in the UK with special reference to unpublished materials such as maps, legal records, records of local authorities, and parish registers. Authors Tim Padfield and Victoria Stobo also give comprehensive information on authorship and duration of copyright in older as well as modern works and on the wide range of exceptions and limitations to copyright. Offering advice on rights in the electronic environment, moral rights, and rights in databases, the new edition incorporates legislative changes since the UK's exit from the European Union. Extensively revised, this classic text also explores new topics such as:

  • different approaches to risk management and mitigation;
  • using AI in archives and records collections;
  • impediments to access and use of records created by technical protection measures;
  • the legal implications of digital preservation activities; and
  • the impact of ongoing European and international legislative changes.

Padfield MA LLM worked at The National Archives (formerly the Public Record Office) for over thirty years before his retirement in 2013. He is a specialist in copyright, with particular reference to unpublished materials and has a postgraduate law degree, with merit. He is a past chair of the Libraries and Archives Copyright Alliance and is adviser on copyright to the Society of Archivists, the International Council on Archives and the Bodleian Libraries.

Stobo is a Lecturer in Record-Keeping at the Liverpool University Centre for Archive Studies. She has worked in a variety of archives, museums, libraries and galleries since 2008. She qualified as an archivist in 2012, taking an MSc in Information Management and Preservation in the Department of Information Studies at the University of Glasgow and later went on to a PhD study examining the ways in which copyright law affects the digitization of archive collections in the UK, which she completed in 2018.
