PLA opens proposal window for “Hot Takes” and “How-To” programming at 2026 national conference

CHICAGO — The Public Library Association (PLA) opened a call for proposals for the popular How-To Stage and new Hot Takes event at the PLA 2026 Conference, to be held April 1-3, 2026, in Minneapolis, Minn. The submission deadline for these short program slots is Dec. 15, 2025.

The How-To Stage features 20-minute sessions intended to teach practical, hands-on skills to conference attendees. The stage is a platform for a cooperative learning experience where attendees will learn something new and actively participate in conference learning. Topics can be about anything, so get creative! Visit the PLA 2022 How-To Festival page for examples of past topics.

New in 2026, PLA is inviting you to consult your crystal ball and share your 5-minute “hot take” on the future of public libraries. We’re looking for mild, medium, and spicy ideas to get people talking! Hot Takes is a learning and networking event that features quick, high-energy talks from passionate public library people. Pop in to share your ideas, get inspired, and make connections on Tues., March 30, before the official conference kick-off!

The proposal portal for these two opportunities will close on Mon., Dec. 15, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. Central Time. Applications will be reviewed based on relevance to the profession and general interest to conference attendees.

In addition to Hot Takes and the How-To Stage, the PLA 2026 conference will feature more than 100 thoughtfully curated education sessions, inspiring speakers and authors, engaging networking opportunities, career services, and a bustling exhibits hall featuring the latest in products, services, and innovations. From five-minute Hot Takes to two-hour Deep Dives on topics ranging from fundraising to community partnerships to staff retention, this conference offers can’t-miss content by and for public library staff at all stages of their careers.

Personal members of PLA and the Minnesota Library Association receive exclusive access to the Early Bird discount—saving more than $300 over nonmembers on registration through Jan. 9, 2026. Advance registration is available to all attendees through Feb. 20, 2026. Group discounts also are available.

The How-To Stage is exclusively supported by Ingram, a platinum-level sponsor of the PLA 2026 Conference. Learn more about conference sponsorship opportunities online.
