New Research Examines School Library Smartphone Use in Croatia

CHICAGO – Newly published research study from the American Association of School Librarians’ (AASL) peer-reviewed online journal, School Library Research (SLR), used surveys and research methodology to analyzed smartphone usage by school librarians in Croatia. Articles can be accessed for free at www.ala.org/aasl/slr.

In the recently published “School Librarians Using Smartphones for Higher Productivity during the COVID-19 Pandemic” Zvjezdana Dukic and Daria Pestic present a study examining how school librarians in Croatia use smartphone technologies for productivity, and how that usage changed during the COVID-19 pandemic. The researchers collected data via surveys, using an online questionnaire to poll Croatian school librarians.

This research found that Croatian school librarians use smartphones and smartphone technologies for a number of reasons, including professional responsibilities, collaboration with colleagues, and professional development. The research indicates that this usage increased in the advent of remote teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic. The research aligns with similar studies in Australia, the UK, and Hong Kong, but the researchers recommend additional studies in other countries with a larger sample size to see if these trends hold true globally.

School Library Research (ISSN: 2165-1019) is the successor to School Library Media Research (ISSN: 1523-4320) and School Library Media Quarterly Online. The journal is peer-reviewed and indexed by H. W. Wilson's Library Literature and by the ERIC Clearinghouse on Information & Technology. It welcomes manuscripts that focus on high-quality original research concerning the management, implementation, and evaluation of school libraries.
