AASL announces publication of the second edition of the National School Library Standards for Learners, School Librarians, and School Libraries
CHICAGO — Published by the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) and ALA Editions, the newly released second edition of “National School Library Standards for Learners, School Librarians, and School Libraries” equips school librarians with the tools they need to advocate for their critical role in education. In addition, this updated text ensures school librarians are positioned to remain indispensable and impactful, meeting the evolving needs of all learners in today’s rapidly changing educational landscape.
The AASL Standards center learners as active seekers and creators of knowledge, emphasizing their participation in a learning process that is supported by school librarians and libraries. While the core frameworks remain intact, this edition sharpens and clarifies the supporting text—bridging theory and practice more effectively than ever. School librarians will discover fresh strategies to design, support, assess, integrate, and personalize competency-based learning experiences across all grade levels and content areas.
As a foundational resource for the profession, with a strong focus on advocacy and educational leadership, the AASL Standards empower school librarians to demonstrate their unique value, drive student success, and align their work with school and district-wide goals. This edition delivers practical tools and real-world examples to help school librarians apply the standards with confidence.
“The second edition reaffirms the strength of our National School Library Standards, while bringing them to life in today’s educational landscape,” said AASL President Amanda Kordeliski. “I’m deeply grateful to the AASL Standards Committee, whose commitment and expertise has enhanced this text with clearer connections to practice and relevant, real-world applications. I’m thrilled for school librarians to use it as a catalyst—for inspiring learners, supporting educators, and championing the vital role of the school library.”
The AASL Standards will be available in the AASL Bookstore at the 2025 AASL National Conference (October 16-18) in St. Louis. AASL Standards Committee members will also lead a strand of sessions and events onsite highlighting content from the second edition.
