American Library Association adds Independent Book Publishers Association to professional affiliate roster
CHICAGO – The American Library Association is pleased to announce that the ALA Council approved the Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA) as an affiliate. The action took place June 30 at Council Meeting III during the 2025 ALA Annual Conference and Exhibition in Philadelphia.
The ALA Executive Board vetted the application to ensure IBPA’s mission and bylaws align with ALA. IBPA's mission is to lead and serve the independent publishing community through advocacy, education, and tools for success. It champions access for all readers to high quality, diverse books published by independent voices.
“In today’s complex landscape, coalition-building across the publishing and library communities is more important than ever. IBPA is honored to become an ALA affiliate and help strengthen connections between independent publishers and library professionals. We look forward to contributing our perspective and supporting libraries in their vital work to ensure access to diverse books and ideas,” said Andrea Fleck-Nisbet, IBPA CEO.
Established in California in 1983, IBPA has 3,500 members comprising traditional and hybrid independent publishers, university and nonprofit presses, and author-publishers. IBPA is the largest association of publishers in the United States.
