ALA responds to 'unlawful dismissal' of Register of Copyrights

Washington — Cindy Hohl, President of the American Library Association (ALA), released the following statement* on the Trump Administration's firing of Shira Perlmutter, Register of Copyrights:

"ALA is dismayed at the unlawful dismissal of Register of Copyrights Shira Perlmutter, who has led the Copyright Office with integrity, intelligence and an understanding of intellectual property issues. Register Perlmutter's work with the library community on the U.S. implementation of the Marrakesh Treaty before becoming Registrar demonstrated a commitment to improving access to information resources and reading materials for print disabled persons, both in the United States and around the world.

"The Trump Administration's unlawful removal of the Register of Copyrights follows a pattern of targeting library and information leaders in nonpartisan positions. Congress must stand up for its Library and intervene to counter this dangerous campaign to weaken institutional knowledge and professionalism."

* Updated 5/12/2025: A previous version of this release incorrectly identified the Register as Dr. Shira Perlmutter. Perlmutter holds a Juris Doctor.
