AASL announces the second edition of the National School Library Standards for Learners, School Librarians, and School Libraries

CHICAGO — Published by the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) and ALA Editions, the forthcoming second edition of “National School Library Standards for Learners, School Librarians, and School Libraries” will equip school librarians with the tools they need to advocate for their critical role in education. Furthermore, the updated AASL Standards will ensure school librarians are positioned to remain indispensable and impactful, meeting the evolving needs of all learners in today’s rapidly changing educational landscape.
With publication set for Fall 2025, the book is now available for pre-order. The updated AASL Standards position learners as active seekers and creators of knowledge, emphasizing their participation in a learning process that is supported by school librarians and libraries. While the AASL Standards frameworks remain consistent, this edition refines and strengthens the supporting text, effectively bridging theory and practice. School Librarians will find valuable insights on how to design, support, assess, and personalize competency-based learning experiences across grade levels and content areas.
As a foundational resource for school librarians, the AASL Standards provide essential context for educational leadership. The second edition is enriched with actionable strategies and practical examples to enhance the application of standards, empowering school librarians to advocate for their essential vocation within the school system and contribute to broader school and district goals through the school library.
