Sylvia Knight Norton announces retirement as AASL Executive Director

CHICAGO- Sylvia Knight Norton, executive director of the American Association of School Librarians (AASL), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), has announced her retirement effective April 11, 2025.

Since 2013, Norton has overseen the division, driving the restructuring of the AASL Board of Directors and association governance, developing inspiring programs, and launching initiatives that have positioned AASL as the leading organization for school librarians in advocacy, leadership, and professional standards.

The National School Library Standards for Learners, School Librarians, and School Libraries, a groundbreaking publication, was launched during Norton’s tenure. Norton also navigated AASL through the challenging years of a national pandemic which forced school closures and amplified the role of school librarians across the country in maintaining access for learners, educators, and parents within their community by providing digital and literacy resources as well as technology access and support for teaching and learning.

“It has been an incredible honor to serve as the executive director of the American Association of School Librarians (AASL),” shared Norton. “As a school librarian myself, I deeply value the advocacy AASL provides for the profession. The dedicated AASL team along with exceptional member leaders consistently develop valuable resources and meaningful experiences for school librarians. While I am excited to embark on a new chapter in my life, I will certainly miss the moments of growth and collaboration with knowledgeable ALA staff, committed member leaders, and my colleagues in our educational partnerships. Together, we've faced challenges and embraced opportunities to support the profession and enhance the experiences of all learners.”

Norton came to AASL after her time with the Maine Department of Education where she served as the school library, technology planning, and E-rate coordinator. She also served on the ALA Executive Board, ALA Council, and AASL’s Board of Directors.

“Sylvia’s extensive expertise in the school library field, combined with her unwavering dedication and tireless efforts, will leave a profound and enduring mark on AASL,” said association President Becky Calzada. “Her commitment to school libraries and steadfast leadership over the past decade has been truly remarkable. Sylvia’s contributions have been significant, and her absence will be deeply felt.”

Allison Cline, AASL Deputy Executive Director, will serve as the association’s interim director. Details about the search for a new executive director will be announced later this year.
