Steve Hofstetter to Deliver Keynote Address at 2025 AASL National Conference
CHICAGO — Steve Hofstetter, celebrated comedian, acclaimed author, and Nobel Peace Prize nominee for his impactful charity work within the comedy community, will headline the opening general session of the 2025 American Association of School Librarians (AASL) National Conference. The event will take place October 16-18 in St. Louis, Missouri. Full conference details and programming are available at national.aasl.org.
"We are thrilled that Steve Hofstetter will be kicking off AASL25 as our opening keynote speaker," said conference co-chairs Arlene Laverde, Jennifer Sturge, and Carolyn Vibbert. "A true champion of school libraries, Steve will start the National Conference off with humor and inspiration. His message of inclusion, resistance, and support resonates deeply with the values of our community and is exactly what we need to energize attendees."
Hofstetter, author of Ginger Kid and the newly released Grape Expectations, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity. “The school library was a refuge for me," Hofstetter shared. "It’s where I learned my love for the written word, for clever phrasing, and for a good plot twist. It’s where I explored fictional worlds and researched history to learn more about the one we live in. I want to thank AASL for trusting me with such an important platform."
"We are excited that attendees will hear Steve Hofstetter speak,” said AASL conference co-chairs. “Laughter plays a vital role in maintaining both mental and emotional well-being. School libraries serve as more than just spaces for books—they are environments where students can experience joy, foster connections, and feel a sense of belonging. Steve’s humor and message of inclusion will undoubtedly provide an energizing and inspiring start to the event."
Showing even more support for libraries, Hofstetter is donating copies of his book, Grape Expectations, to conference attendees, ensuring children across the country gain valuable lessons on inclusion, resistance, and support.
The AASL National Conference is the only event of its kind dedicated exclusively to the needs of school librarians and their roles as educational leaders. Attendees and participants are encouraged to use the official conference hashtag, #AASL25, to join the conversation and share their experiences.
The American Association of School Librarians (AASL), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), empowers school library leaders to transform teaching and learning. For more information, visit www.aasl.org.
