The American Library Association (ALA) is pleased to announce the selection of Tyler Brady of Honea Path, South Carolina as the 2024 Miriam L. Hornback Scholarship recipient.

The $3,000 award is given to an ALA or library support staff member to help finance the pursuit of a master’s degree in library and information studies. The scholarship was named in memory of Miriam L. Hornback, a longtime ALA staff member, who was secretariat to the ALA Council and Executive Board.

Brady says that libraries are one of her favorite places to be. She believes the library is “a place where people from all walks of life can go to connect with others as well as a place where lifelong learning occurs and where people can have fun.”

Currently, Brady works as a library assistant at the Abbeville County Library System (S.C.) and says, “it has been a joy to hold this position. I love the public library sector and I hope to continue serving others for a long time. I have always had a desire to help others because so many have helped me. I want to reach underserved populations in our community such as people experiencing homelessness, older adults, and people with disabilities. I want to make sure they know the library is a resource for them to get the information they seek.”

Brady’s excellence in service to the community has been noted by many. In speaking of Brady, one reference commented that ”she has the drive and determination to make a difference in her work and her community.” Another reference stated that Brady is “self-motivated and enthusiastic with a passion for helping others to learn and improve their lives.” Yet another reference said that Brady “consistently demonstrates her passion for serving her rural community. Her commitment is steadfast, and I know she is going to make so many important contributions to our field in so many areas.”

Brady attends the University of South Carolina (Columbia).
