Rowan Wiebe Selected as the 2024 ALA Century Scholarship Recipient

The American Library Association (ALA) is pleased to announce the selection of Rowan Wiebe of Canada as the 2024 Century Scholarship recipient.
The $2,500 scholarship funds services or accommodation for a library school student with disabilities admitted to an ALA-accredited library program.
Wiebe got their first experience working in a library during high school when they worked as a page. During this time, Wiebe enjoyed teaching people how to navigate the library’s systems and the basics of using computers. Currently, Wiebe is interested in digital preservation and wants to learn how to capture and archive online games, forums, streams, and blogs along with other online facets of culture.
One reference recognizes Wiebe’s potential and believes that Wiebe will excel as a leader and innovator in the library profession, commenting that Wiebe “enjoys this work and is consistently looking for opportunities to improve data systems so that they are user-friendly and efficient.” This reference also shared the idea that libraries are a foundation in communities and says that “Wiebe recognizes the importance of this institution not only for knowledge preservation and dissemination, but also as a site in which to build community. Wiebe is the kind of person who can spark a lifelong passion for learning in others.”
Wiebe says they really want to be a librarian. Wiebe stated, “I have seen firsthand how people’s lives change when they read books reflecting their lives and identities. I want to share our history and our culture with the next generation in the same way librarians showed the world to me.”
Wiebe will be attending the University of Alberta (Canada).
