Blair Black Selected as the 2023 Peter Lyman Memorial/SAGE Scholarship Recipient
The American Library Association and SAGE are pleased to announce Blair Black of Los Angeles, California as the recipient of the 2023 Peter Lyman Memorial/SAGE Scholarship in New Media.
As a current doctoral student in the University of California, Los Angeles’ ethnomusicology program, Black has focused her research on the preservation and representation of underrepresented communities in electronic dance music archives.
Black’s hope is to gain the knowledge and skills that will allow her to “address the under documentation of musicians from queer and communities of color.” With a commitment to making academic theory relevant to real-world industry practices, Black’s long-term goal is to become the head archivist of a digital community archive.
Black will be attending the MLIS program at the University of California, Los Angeles.
The Peter Lyman Memorial/SAGE Scholarship in New Media was created in memory of Peter Lyman, former university librarian and professor emeritus of the school of information at the University of California, Berkeley. Lyman’s research focused on online information, ethnographic analyses of online social relationships and communities, and bringing university librarians into the digital era. He was one of the first scholars to work with computer companies to design information technology appropriate for research and teaching.
