Winter break @ your library
CHICAGO — Kids, tweens and teens are counting down the days until winter break and looking forward to two weeks without school. While part of the vacation will be taken up with family celebration, two weeks can lead to a lot of free time. Below are just a few ideas of how libraries are planning something for everyone this winter break.
The Poudre River (Colo.) Public Library has lined up a number of winter programs, beginning with Teens create holiday decorations @ your library. The annual event will feature new ornament designs that teens can use to make thoughtful and creative holiday gifts. Following the holiday, the library will host Winter Break Fun @ your library, which will feature programs like a comedy magic show, magic trick lessons and book clubs.
Over winter break St. Johns County (Fla.) Public Library will invite children, tweens and teens to Connect, Learn, Enjoy @ your library with gaming. Participants will have the option to choose from a wide selection of both video game and gaming consoles as they enjoy their vacation from school.
Hennepin County (Minn.) Public Libraries will hold its very own Santa’s workshop this month with Crafty December @ your library. Branch libraries will host different craft projects throughout the month, as well as increase visibility for their selection of craft books, which will be on display throughout the system to help provide cost-effective alternatives to holiday shopping. Stitch together a tiny stuffed animal that you can hang on your holiday tree, make it into a keychain or give as a gift.
There’s nothing like snuggling up with a good book on cold nights. At the Tualatin (Ore.) Public Library , Winter Reading @ your library, encourages all ages to use their library cards for a chance to win a $100 gift card.
The Campaign for America’s Libraries is the ALA’s public awareness campaign that promotes the value of libraries and librarians.
