United for Libraries accepting National Friends of Libraries Week Award applications through Dec. 3

PHILADELPHIA — United for Libraries will present two awards of $250 to Friends of the Library groups for activities held during National Friends of Libraries Week (Oct. 21-27, 2012).

National Friends of Libraries Week was celebrated all over the country with proclamations, membership drives, volunteer appreciation luncheons, special author events and more. The annual event, now in its seventh year, offers a two-fold opportunity to celebrate Friends. Friends groups use the time to creatively promote their group in the community, to raise awareness and to promote membership. In addition, libraries and Boards of Trustees recognize the Friends for their help and support of the library.

National Friends of Libraries Week Award winners will also receive a free copy of “Hands Around the Library: Protecting Egypt’s Treasured Books” by Susan L. Roth and Karen Leggett Abouraya (Dial/Random House, 2012). Application materials are available on the United for Libraries website. Entries are due by Dec. 3, 2012. Past winning entries may also be viewed on the website.
