Olson wins 2013 ACRL WGSS Career Achievement Award
CHICAGO – Hope Olson, professor in the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee’s School of Information Studies, has been selected as the 2013 winner of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Women and Gender Studies Section (WGSS) Career Achievement Award. The award honors significant long-standing contributions to women’s studies in the field of librarianship over the course of a career.
A plaque will be presented to Olson at 8:30 a.m. on July 1, 2013, at the WGSS program during the ALA Annual Conference in Chicago.
“The committee selected Hope Olson based on her scholarship and teaching, especially the emphasis on feminism in information studies and librarianship,” said award Chair Pamela Mann of St. Mary's College of Maryland. “We were particularly impressed with the way she incorporated the Research Agenda for Women and Gender Studies Librarianship into the classroom.”
The award committee looked at her entire 20-plus year career and was impressed with her body of work, which included teaching, research and service. Olson manages to include feminist theory and pedagogy in all aspects of her work, whether it is teaching a course on the political and cultural ramifications of subject classification at the School of Information Studies or publishing in refereed library science journals such as Library Quarterly or renowned women’s studies journals like Signs: Journal of Women in Culture in Society. Olson also has had a lasting influence in WGSS through the Research Agenda for Women and Gender Studies Librarianship. This guide was created by WGSS and Olson incorporated it into her class, Feminism, Librarianship and Information.
Olson received her B.A. from Gustavus Adolphus College, her M.L.S. from the University of Toronto and her Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin–Madison.
