A new technical services model for electronic resource management

CHICAGO — E-resources now account for the bulk of materials spending in many libraries. “Electronic Resource Management: Practical Perspectives in a New Technical Services Model,” published by Chandos Publishing and available through ALA Neal-Schuman, makes the case that technical services workflows need to make a corresponding shift toward e-centric models and highlights the increasing variety of e-formats that are forcing new developments in the field. Authors Anne C. Elguindi and Kari Schmidt focus on the unique attributes of electronic resource management that are distinct from traditional print materials workflows, using case studies to cover key topics such as:

  • Technical services models, both past and emerging;
  • Staffing and workflow in electronic resource management;
  • Implementation and transformation of electronic resource management systems;
  • The role of the electronic resource librarian in discovery systems, layers and tools;
  • Academic library consortia and the evolving role of electronic resources and technology.

Elguindi is the director of information delivery services at the American University Library in Washington, D.C., responsible for the Electronic Resources Management, Access Services, Cataloging Services and Acquisitions Units. Prior to her position with the American University she was a reference and data services librarian at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and Public Services Librarian at Western Piedmont Community College.

Schmidt is the electronic resources librarian and head of the Electronic Resources Management Unit at the American University Library in Washington, D.C. She previously held the same post at the University of Maryland and was assistant director for resource management at Georgetown University’s Medical Center Library.
