The Library Support Staff Certification (LSSC) program recognizes Pasadena City College graduates

CHICAGO - The American Library Association-Allied Professional Association (ALA-APA) announced today that it has completed an agreement with the Pasadena City College (PCC) Library Technology Certificate Program that will allow PCC graduates to receive the Library Support Staff Certfication (LSSC) without having to complete additional courses or portfolios.

PCC and ALA-APA believe that the LSSC will benefit graduates, the library in which they work, and library users. Lorelle Swader, Director of ALA-APA, said that, “This national Certfication will recognize PCC graduates for their acquired skills and knowledge. The LSSC, which is becoming a national standard, shows employers that these graduates are committed to library work and their future.” Krista Goguen, PCC’s Library Technology Program Coordinator said, “The LSSC Certification process has strengthened our program curriculum. We are pleased to be able to offer this additional recognition of our students’ achievements.”

The ALA-APA proposed this agreement after a review of PCC’s curriculums for both their Certificate of Achievement and the Associate in Science Degree found that graduates must complete courses that cover the majority of LSSC’s competency requirements.

ALA-APA is also comparing the curriculums to LSSC’s competency requirements of 13 other community colleges in 2012 and has recognition agreements with the following colleges.

  • College of DuPage, Glen Ellyn, Illinois
  • Ivy Tech Community College, Indianapolis, Indiana
  • Palomar College in San Marcos, California
  • Waubonsee Community College, Aurora, Illinois
  • Illinois Central College, Peoria, Illinois

Funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the American Library Association developed and established the LSSC Program, and support ALA-APA’s work with LTA programs.
