South Carolina Association of School Librarians receives AASL Chapter of the Year Award

CHICAGO – The South Carolina Association of School Librarians (SCASL) is the recipient of the 2022 American Association of School Librarians’ (AASL) Chapter of the Year Award. The $1,000 award recognizes the AASL Chapter most active and dynamic in achieving the goals of AASL at the state and local level.

“The committee was very impressed with SCASL’s commitment to advancing school librarianship in their state. Through their Emerging Leaders program that has created a pipeline for future leaders in the chapter, to their Pre-service outreach with Teacher Cadets, SCASL is building for the future,” said Brittany Tignor, award committee chair. “The committee commends SCASL’s communication within the state through legislator and decision-maker outreach promoting year-round conversations and collaborations with the South Carolina Association of School Administrators, including a school librarian and principal co-authored article, ‘Bouncing Back From Pandemic Setbacks: Strong School Libraries Empower Students,’ and conference presentation.”

“SCASL members strive for excellence in their buildings and communities. SCASL encourages our members to shout from the rooftops about their amazing work,” said SCASL president-elect Tamara Cox. “We don’t sit back and watch the world change around us, we mobilize and push for the change that we know our students need.”

AASL President Jennisen Lucas said “SCASL’s commitment to the AASL’s National School Library Standards is exceptional with resources for curriculum mapping to the state evaluation system, inclusion in state award rubrics, conference session proposal application, and state training from chapter leaders. Congratulations to SCASL and thank you for advancing school librarianship in South Carolina and offering programs and resources that other AASL Chapters can advance in their states.”

The AASL award winners will be recognized during the 2023 AASL National Conference taking place October 19-21 in Tampa, Florida.
