Tiffany H. Ly Selected as 2021 Miriam L. Hornback Scholarship Recipient
The American Library Association (ALA) has selected Tiffany H. Ly of Minneapolis, Minnesota as the 2021 Miriam L. Hornback Scholarship recipient.
The $3,000 award is given to an ALA or library support staff member to help finance the pursuit of a master’s degree in library and information studies. The scholarship was named in memory of Miriam L. Hornback, a longtime ALA staff member, who was secretariat to the ALA Council and Executive Board.
Ly spent four years working in Japan as a native-speaking English teacher. She says this experience along with her volunteer work assisting with an interactive exhibit designed to educate the public about the global refugee crisis, taught her the critical role of community education and access to resources. It also reinforced her belief in the importance of helping others. She has worked as a student circulation manager, law library assistant, library page, and library associate.
References believe that Ly would be an asset to the library profession. One person commented that, “Ly would make an excellent addition to the library profession. Her work ethic and knowledge are extraordinary.” Another person stated that she “is highly competent and enthusiastic. She has the potential to be a great leader in the profession. We very much need someone with her background and expertise. Her presence and participation in the profession can change and enrich the dynamic in our community (particularly given the fact that the library workforce here is not very diverse).” Yet another person said that “Ly’s understanding of library work, organizational skills, curiosity, and inquiry know-how, along with an ability to take initiative and provide support to peers in collaborative efforts all combine to give her a unique perspective. Guided by professional values, integrity, and commitment to diversity and inclusion, Ly can only enhance the library profession.”
Ly attends St. Catherine University (Saint Paul, Minnesota).
