Final Reminder: Polls close April 4 in 2018 PLA Election

CHICAGO -- Time is running out for Public Library Association (PLA) members to cast their ballots in the association's 2018 election. The polls will close at 11:59 p.m. Central Time on Wednesday, April 4.

This year, six nominees will stand for three positions on the Board of Directors: PLA President and two Director-at-Large seats. These are crucial leadership roles that will guide PLA into the next several years, ensuring the organization delivers on its core purpose to strengthen public libraries and their contribution to the communities they serve.

Members will also have the opportunity to vote on two ALA ballot measures: the first a proposed adjustment to ALA membership dues and the second related to the educational requirements for the next ALA executive director. On the latter ballot measure, the PLA Board of Directors—in alignment with ten of the eleven divisions, the ALA Board, ALA Council, and the Search Committee—is encouraging its members to vote “no." PLA has also released a statement against the current ALA ballot measure, and in favor of retaining "MLIS preferred" status for the next ALA executive director. Please visit the PLA Election Page to read the statement.

To be eligible to vote, individuals must be members in good standing of ALA as well as applicable divisions and round tables as of January 31, 2018. Eligible voters should have received their voting credentials by email between March 12 and March 14. Any individuals whose emails bounce will be sent a “snail-mail” letter with their voting credentials.

The ALA Election Committee will meet at the ALA headquarters on April 11 to certify the election. Election results will be released following that meeting.
