Google experts to introduce new coding curriculum CS First in hands-on session at 2017 Midwinter Meeting

WASHINGTON — Google education experts will provide a hands-on coding session to introduce Google’s recently released coding curriculum, CS First, at the ALA Midwinter Meeting and Exhibits in Atlanta.

“The view from Google: What’s happening in coding and computational thinking?” is a workshop that is part of ALA’s Libraries Ready to Code partnership with Google, Inc. The session will be held twice, from 1 – 2:20 p.m. and from 2:40 – 4 p.m., on Friday Jan. 20, at the Georgia World Congress Center, Room A304.

Coding programs are trending in public and school libraries across the country, expanding career options in computer science (CS) and other professions, and developing computational thinking skills for all youth. For many young people – especially girls, youth of color and those living in poverty – libraries provide the only access to technology outside the classroom.

Google’s CS First program offers resources that promise to increase student access and exposure to CS education.

Tina Ornduff, engineering education program manager, Google, Inc., and Hai Hong, K-12 education program manager, Google, Inc., will be on hand to introduce the resources.
