CHICAGO—ALA Editions announces an exciting new workshop, Keys to Teaching the Six Threshold Concepts with Joanna M. Burkhardt. This workshop will last 90 minutes and take place at 2:30pm Eastern/1:30 Central/12:30 Mountain/11:30am Pacific on Thursday, August 4, 2016.

Are you looking to get fully acclimated with ACRL’s newly adopted Framework for Information for Higher Education, learn what each of the threshold concepts are, and how to incorporate them into their information literacy instruction? In this workshop, experienced presenter and bestselling author in information literacy in the classroom Joanna M. Burkhardt will unpack the threshold concepts and translate them into practical application. She will give a brief overview of the six threshold concepts and provide you with feedback on how you can create exercises that propel students toward and across those thresholds.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Connect Framework threshold concepts to practical instruction to create your own Framework-based exercises
  • Learn simple instructional design basics
  • Gain an overview on learning outcomes and assessments associated with the threshold concepts

About the Instructor(s)

Joanna M. Burkhardt is Chair of the Technical Services Department, Collection Management Officer, and Director of the Narragansett Bay Campus and Providence Campus branch libraries of the University of Rhode Island. Her research has focused on information literacy and instruction, assessment, and collection development. She is author of the forthcoming Teaching Information Literacy Reframed and lead author of Teaching Information Literacy: 50 Standards-based Exercises for College Students and Creating a Comprehensive Information Literacy Plan. She has authored numerous articles and made presentations about instruction and Information Literacy. She has reviewed books forLibrary Journal and American Reference Books Annual for more than 30 years.
