Dan Cohen Receives 2016 LITA/Library Hi Tech Award

Dan Cohen is the winner of the 2016 LITA/Library Hi Tech Award for Outstanding Communication in Library and Information Technology.

The Library and Information Technology Association (LITA) and Emerald Group Publishing sponsor the Award, which recognizes outstanding individuals or institutions for their long-term contributions in the area of Library and Information Science technology and its application. The winner receives a citation and a $1,000 stipend.

The Award Committee selected Cohen because of his massive contributions through his work with the DPLA, Zotero, publishing, online exhibitions/collections, and his contributions through his writings. His work with the DPLA in particular stood out to the group.

Cohen is the founding Executive Director of the Digital Public Library of America. Previously he was a Professor of History in the Department of History and Art History at George Mason University and the Director of the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media. He is the co-author of Digital History: A Guide to Gathering, Preserving, and Presenting the Past on the Web (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2005), author of Equations from God: Pure Mathematics and Victorian Faith (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2007), and co-editor of Hacking the Academy (University of Michigan Press, 2012). I have published articles and book chapters on new media, the history of mathematics and religion, the teaching of history, scholarly communication, and the future of the humanities in a digital age in journals such as the Journal of American History, Victorian Studies, and Rethinking History.

Cohen received the LITA/OCLC Kilgour Research Award in 2011 for leading the development of the free, open-source Zotero software for managing and sharing research sources. He has also directed several archival projects, including the September 11 Digital Archive, ECHO: Exploring & Collecting History Online, and the Hurricane Digital Memory Bank: Preserving the Stories of Katrina, Rita, and Wilma.

When notified he had won the Award, Cohen said, "I'm deeply honored to receive this award from LITA, with whom I share a passion for widely applying library and information technology to maximize access to our shared culture."
