Canadian Copyright Law, new eTutorial

CHICAGO — ALA Publishing eLearning announces a new eTutorial, Canadian Copyright Law with Lesley Ellen Harris. This 3-week eTutorial is asynchronous and begins Feb. 28, 2016.

CCL is a 16-eTutorial primer and refresher on Canadian copyright law. It includes information on recent amendments to the Canadian Copyright Act and June 2012 Supreme Court of Canada court decisions. Each e-lesson will be emailed to you (please provide the correct email address upon purchase to receive e-lessons) and provides up-to-date information on the topics listed in the outline below, sets out fundamentals for that topic, and resources for further reading.

After completing this eTutorial, you’ll be able to:

  • explain Canadian copyright law concepts, such as how to obtain protection, rights granted to authors and owners, and limitations on those rights;
  • understand when the use of digital content or social media involves a copyright issue;
  • identify what is protected by Canadian copyright law and when you need permission to use copyright materials.

About the Instructor:

Lesley Ellen Harris is a copyright, licensing, and digital property expert who consults on legal, business, policy, and strategic issues in the publishing, entertainment, Internet, and information industries. She frequently works with libraries, archives, museums, and educational institutions. She teaches in-person and online courses on copyright and licensing through and in conjunction with national and regional associations in Canada and the United States. Harris is the author of numerous articles and several books including Canadian Copyright Law (4th ed., 2014) and Licensing Digital Content: A Practical Guide for Librarians (2nd ed., 2009).
