First Step Award to Emily Cable

CHICAGO — The Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS) congratulates Emily Cable, serials and e-resource librarian at the Salem Public Library in Salem, Oregon, as the recipient of the 2015 First Step Award—A Wiley Professional Development Grant presented by the ALCTS Continuing Resources Section. The award will be presented on Saturday, June 27, at the ALCTS Awards Ceremony during the 2015 American Library Association (ALA) Annual Conference and Exposition in San Francisco.

Cable began her career in libraries through internship and practicum student responsibilities at Portland State University, the Colorado Nexus Consortium and the Oregon Health & Sciences University. After serving in a staff position at the Salem Public Library from June 2013 to September 2014, she assumed the professional position of serials and e-resources Librarian. In this position, she manages the acquisition, licensing, cataloging, access and evaluation of the library’s serials and e-resource collections.

Cable, who was previously the recipient of the 2014 NASIG Serials Specialist Award, has been actively engaged in professional development activities through her service to the Oregon Library Association, through her attendance at state and national conferences and through her memberships in ALCTS and the ALA New Members Roundtable. By receiving the 2015 First Step Award, Cable will be able to further her professional development and strengthen her involvement in ALCTS.

She graduated from the University of Oregon with a bachelor of science degree in journalism. She subsequently earned a master of library science degree from the Emporia State University School of Library and Information Management.

John Wiley & Sons sponsors this $1,500 grant, which offers librarians new to the serials field an opportunity to broaden their perspective by attending an ALA Annual Conference and by encouraging professional growth through participation in ALCTS Continuing Resources Section activities.

ALCTS is the national association for information providers who work in collections and technical services, such as acquisitions, cataloging, metadata, collection management, preservation, and electronic and continuing resources. ALCTS is a division of the American Library Association.
