PLA offering three preconferences for public library staff at ALA Annual Conference

CHICAGO — On Friday morning, June 27, of the 2014 ALA Annual Conference in Las Vegas, the Public Library Association (PLA) is sponsoring three preconferences ideal for public library professionals.

  • Beyond Glitz and Glitter: Great Brands Start from Within; 8:30 a.m.–noon, June 27:

    Hear how three libraries—all in different phases of their brand's lifecycle—moved beyond the glitz and glitter to create brands that resonate with staff and customers alike. Presenters: Kyle Cox, Mid-Columbia Libraries, Kennewick, Wash.; Stacie Ledden, communications director, Anythink Libraries, Thornton, Colo.; Jim Staley, Mid-Continent Public Library, Independence, Mo.



  • Creating a Collaborative Culture; 8:30 a.m.–noon, June 27:

    Come learn the transformative power of reframing failure, the true meaning of "yes, and" and the kinds of listening that change lives:

    Presenter: Cheryl Gould, Fully Engaged Libraries, Petaluma, Calif.



  • Stepping into the Director Role: Preparing for the Part; 8:30 a.m.–noon, June 27:

    Hear from four new public library directors about the basics, the challenges and the unexpected in their first few years on the job. Learn how they used career opportunities, ALA experience, and other guideposts to enter administration successfully.

Preconferences do require a separate registration; however you do not need to be registered for the ALA Annual Conference itself to register for a preconference.
