A how-to manual for embedding librarianship in learning management systems

CHICAGO — Information literacy instruction is best when it is integrated into actual research, and in higher education that means embedding librarianship into the learning management system (LMS). “Embedding Librarianship in Learning Management Systems: A How-To-Do-It Manual for Librarians,” published by ALA Neal-Schuman, is geared toward academic librarians already working with classes in an LMS as well as those considering how to begin a pilot. Beth E. Tumbleson and John J. Burke, who surveyed 280 librarians for information on related activities, also use their own first-hand experience implementing an embedded librarianship program at their university to offer guidance and encouragement. Showing how to start a program that can be adapted and made sustainable, they include information on:

• Implementing a simple pilot program with a librarian and one or two faculty;
• Understanding and managing workload;
• Nine tips for an effective email solicitation asking faculty to participate;
• 10 selling points to attract students to LMS services;

Tumbleson is assistant director of the Gardner-Harvey Library, on the Middletown regional campus of Miami University (Ohio). Throughout her career, she has worked as an academic, school and corporate librarian. She has co-authored several book chapters and journal articles. Burke is the director of the Gardner-Harvey Library and a past president of the Academic Library Association of Ohio (ALAO). He has held positions in systems, reference and public service and was program director for a Web-based associate degree in library technology at the University of Cincinnati – Raymond Walters College. He is author of three books, including “The Neal-Schuman Library Technology Companion: A Basic Guide for Library Staff,” now in its fourth edition. The authors have presented on embedded librarianship at various national, state and regional conferences including ACRL, LOEX, and the LITA National Forum.
