AASL preconferences empower school librarians as education leaders

CHICAGO – Preconferences offered by the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) before the American Library Association (ALA) 2013 Annual Conference are designed to empower school librarians as education leaders in their schools. These half-day workshops will be offered Friday, June 28 in Chicago. For more information, visit www.ala.org/aasl/annual.

During COMMON sCOREs: Instructional Partnerships that Deliver Success, presenters Judi Moreillon, Suzanna Panter, Gloria Voutos and Stacy Cameron will explore the core of 21st-century school librarianship and its relationship to state standards, including the Common Core. Attendees will build strategies for demonstrating the school librarian’s central role in the academic program through practicing instructional partnerships to ensure success for K-12 students, teachers, administrators, librarians and the school librarian profession.

In Real World, Real Tools, presenters Laura Pearle, Wendy Stephens and Debra Logan will prove serving your students and teachers is still possible by focusing on what your school library program has rather than what is missing. Organized around the powerful system of common beliefs underpinning AASL’s Standards for the 21st-Century Learner, the presenters will emphasize student access to a range of reading materials and how to advance an integrated learning environment by promoting inquiry across the curriculum. Pearle, Stephens and Logan will also look at encouraging both intellectual dispositions and hands-on research with digital authorship projects to enhance technology skills - all while ensuring ethical information behavior and equitable access to all information sources for every student in your building or district.

AASL encourages all librarians interested in becoming an educational leader in their library programs to register now to attend one of these valuable workshops. For fees and to register, visit ala13.ala.org.

The American Association of School Librarians, www.aasl.org, a division of the American Library Association (ALA), promotes the improvement and extension of library services in elementary and secondary schools as a means of strengthening the total education program.
