UNC student Megan England wins student stipend for YALSA’s Young Adult Literature Symposium

CHICAGO — Megan England, a student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, has won the 2012 Young Adult Literature Symposium student stipend from the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA).

England applied for the scholarship to attend programs that directly relate to her research interests, diversity in teen services -- especially LGBTQ issues. Attending the Symposium will give her ideas for future research as well as better equip her for career as a young adult librarian.

“No teen should ever feel unwelcome in a library,” England wrote in her application, “and giving quality service to teens is essential for building lifelong library users.”

Sandra Hughes-Hassell, a professor at UNC’s School of Information and Library Science, recommended England for the stipend. Hughes-Hassell noted that she is the co-chair of Checked Out, the diversity awareness student organization at UNC, with the goal of providing educational opportunities and maintaining an open dialogue about diversity in the information professions.

“I believe attending the Young Adult Literature Symposium will be a valuable experience for Megan,” Hughes Hassell wrote. “She is already a focused and dedicated student, and this opportunity will only intensify her desire to take action and make meaningful change in the field.”

The Young Adult Literature Symposium will be held Nov. 2–4, at the Hyatt Regency St. Louis at the Arch in St. Louis with a theme of “The Future of Young Adult Literature: Hit Me with the Next Big Thing.” The symposium is funded in part by the William C. Morris Endowment. Details about the symposium, including registration rates and housing information, are available at
